Certified Nutrition Specialists® (CNSs) are credentialed experts trained to deliver science-based, personalized nutrition to support healing and prevent illness. With their extensive knowledge in medical nutrition therapy, nutrition science, and behavior change, CNSs strive to help people achieve their health and wellness goals.
The CNS credential
The CNS credential is administered by the Board for Certification of Nutrition Specialists and accredited by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies.
To earn certification, candidates must fulfill four obligations:
- Hold a master’s or doctoral degree in nutrition or a related healthcare field
- Complete 1,000 hours of supervised practice experience
- Pass a board exam assessing comprehensive knowledge of nutrition science and clinical application
- Maintain continuing education requirements for emerging research and best practices
“The CNS credential represents the highest standard in nutrition practice,” says the American Nutrition Association’s CEO and Chief Nutrition Programs Officer Corinne Bush, MS, CNS.
A root-cause approach to wellness
Certified Nutrition Specialists identify nutrition-based solutions for complex health conditions, pinpointing and addressing underlying causes of health imbalances to provide personalized food and supplement recommendations that align with patient goals.
To create practical nutrition and lifestyle plans tailored to a person’s unique needs, CNSs focus on the Personalized Nutrition Care Model. This model begins with a thorough assessment of current nutrition and physiological function, exploring factors such as metabolic status, gut function, hormonal health, and immune resilience. Genetics, environmental exposures, and emotional and behavioral patterns related to eating and stress are also relevant. The assessment is a “roadmap” for creating actionable interventions and education. Once implemented, it serves as a tool through which a CNS can further personalize and monitor care.
How CNSs support whole person health
“Whole person health is the foundation of effective medical nutrition therapy,” says Corinne. “Certified Nutrition Specialists are uniquely trained to assess the complex interplay between biological, behavioral, and environmental factors that shape health.”
Certified Nutrition Specialists hold vital roles across a range of healthcare settings, including integrative medical practices, hospitals, universities, and clinical nutrition counseling centers. Working alongside naturopathic doctors, physicians, acupuncturists, behavioral health providers, and other integrative practitioners, they help build connected, patient-centered models of health care.
Their work also extends beyond one-on-one care. CNSs lead community education and broader wellness initiatives that advance public health through expanded nutrition awareness.
Why the CNS matters
Certified Nutrition Specialists are healthcare providers who harness the power of food, science, and compassion to help everyone feel their best. By guiding simple, sustainable lifestyle changes, they support lasting wellness for people and communities.
