Bastyr University Welcomes Back INM Board Member Dr. Joseph Pizzorno as Interim President

Joseph E. Pizzorno, ND, founding president of Bastyr University and member of the INM Board, is stepping back into a familiar role as interim president of the renowned naturopathic medical school, effective immediately.

As founding president from 1978 to 2000, Dr. Pizzorno set a new standard for academic excellence in natural medicine, establishing Bastyr as the first accredited medical school of its kind in the United States.

An internationally recognized authority on environmental, functional, and integrative medicine, Dr. Pizzorno’s contributions to the field span more than 40 years. He has advised two U.S. presidents on health policy, co-founded national organizations dedicated to naturopathic practice, and written 14 influential books, six of which are medical textbooks used by practitioners today. He is also the editor in chief of Integrative Medicine: A Clinician’s Journal.

Dr. Pizzorno returns to Bastyr with a renewed commitment to the mission he helped build: transforming the healthcare system into one focused on prevention, personalization, and whole person wellness. Dr. Pizzorno’s appointment is not just a reconnection with Bastyr’s past, but a meaningful step toward securing its future.

Dr. Pizzorno’s leadership comes at a crucial time, as Bastyr looks to expand its clinical impact in Seattle and San Diego, strengthen enrollment, and inspire new energy in the field of natural medicine and whole person health. INM welcomes the chance to work more closely with Bastyr in elevating the role of naturopathic providers in integrated, whole person care.

“We suffer the highest burden of chronic disease in every age group ever in human history,” says Dr. Pizzorno. “Why? Because we have lost our understanding of how to be healthy and have polluted the environment with disease-causing metals and chemicals. [It is] the mission of Bastyr University to train cutting-edge healthcare professionals to help people understand why they are sick and how to become healthy.”

As part of INM’s ongoing public education efforts, the organization will feature Dr. Pizzorno in an upcoming webinar, 10 Hidden Toxins in Your Daily Life (and How to Avoid Them), on July 18 at 9 a.m. Pacific. In this session, Dr. Pizzorno will explore the common environmental toxins people encounter every day, and how small, practical changes can lead to profound improvements in health.
